“Sun-splashed prints – sliced, mixed and digitally remastered” are descriptive words that can be used to describe a Mary Katrantzou Spring 2014 runway piece or an iconic painting by British artist David Hockney. In this case, we are referring to the latter. This Fall, Hockney’s exclusive exhibition, David Hockney: A Bigger Exhibition, debuts at the de Young Museum in San Francisco (on view now through January 20, 2014.)

Remarkably, at age 76, Hockney is engaged in one of the most prolific periods of his career. His ambitious pursuit to find new ways to create art has found him using cameras, iPhones, iPads and videos to represent nature. Hockney assembled more than 300 works, exclusively for the de Young, making this the largest exhibition in the history of the museum. Works range from simple pencil drawings on paper, to Bigger Yosemite, five drawings created on the iPad that capture the majesty of the American West.

“Like an artist alchemist, in one minute Hockney uses a fancy digital device to make a colorful iPad drawing; in the next he shows us that he is one of our greatest draftsmen by rendering an exactingly detailed charcoal drawing of a forest scene in East Yorkshire,” notes Richard Benefield, deputy director of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, and organizer of the exhibition. Hockney was elected to the Royal Academy in 1991 and was awarded the Order of Merit by Queen Elizabeth II in 2012 for his significant contribution to the arts.

To paint an even bigger picture, we look forward to honoring Hockney and his monumental landscapes by donning Mary Katrantzou’s Spring 2014 landscape dress. The best of both British art and fashion.
