Marina Lambrini Diamandis of Marina and The Diamonds
April 14, 2015
Marina Lambrini Diamandis is making some noise in the best possible way-as lead singer/songwriter of Atlantic Records’ Marina and The Diamonds. Last month, she dazzled the crowd at the NM Make Some Noise celebration during Austin’s SXSW festival. After much anticipation and shouted “I love yous” from the audience, Marina delivered a high-energy set of new and older hits including “Froot” and “Primadonna Girl.” We asked the Welsh singer about the women who have inspired, her favorite SXSW moments, and how she stays connected with her fans.
NM: Neiman Marcus is celebrating influential women who are making some noise—and making a difference—in the worlds of art, fashion, food, technology and music. Is there a woman who made a difference in your own life or career? Who and how?
Marina: My Mum, who taught me about character and grace. Madonna, for inspiring fearlessness.
NM: What do you feel is important to make some noise about in today’s world?
Marina: Equal rights for women.
NM: This was your first time performing at SXSW—any high points?
Marina: Actually, it was my second time! High point was actually the Neiman Marcus show. That was my favorite. No technical mishaps, which made a nice change! My other high point was my jeans ripping at the crotch moments before I was scheduled to go on.
NM: How much thought do you put into what you wear on stage?
Marina: Quite a bit.
NM: On staying connected: Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, Skype… What are you into and what do you skip?
Marina: I like Twitter + Insta.
NM: What’s the best thing about having a one-on-one relationship with your fans through social media?
Marina: It’s an opportunity to be real.
NM: What advice would you give young women starting off in the music industry?
Marina: You have your own path to make. You don’t need anyone’s advice.
NM: What song should everyone listen to right now?
Marina: “Savages” by moi!
