My Fash Diary’s Tala Samman’s Dubai City Guide
September 29, 2014
Chicago-born, Dubai-bred fashion blogger Tala Samman of MyFashDiary.com celebrates her passions by writing about things she loves – fashion, beauty travel and food. Here, Samman shares her favorite fashion spots in her hometown of Dubai.
NM: Describe a day of your life in Dubai?
TS: Every day is different – and that’s what I love so much about Dubai. Writing a lifestyle website such as myfashdiary.com allows me to discover the most about this amazing, fast-moving city.
NM: Best local food?
TS: I’ve grown up in Dubai, and I never really have local food. But for the best Arabic food in town (but don’t expect anything fancy…) is Mezza House in Downtown Dubai.
NM: Go-to place to eat lunch?
TS: La Petite Maison at DIFC is definitely the “it” place to have lunch – stylish crowd for people watching and for the best food.
NM: Favorite gallery/museum:
TS: The Galleries at Dubai International Financial Center and Serkal Avenue are worth checking all year-round, but the best time in Dubai for art is our art season. My favorite is the Sikka Art fair situated at Al Bastakiya (Old Dubai). So impressed with the Culture & Arts scene here and how it’s evolving!
NM: A secret place only a local would know…
TS: Teatro! If you’ve lived in Dubai for many years, this is really an old-school Dubai gem. Great sushi, great cocktails and exquisite service! You’re lucky if you meet the hilarious and charming manager, Pat.
NM: Best spa treatment?
TS: I like a no fuss massage – go in, get a massage, have a cup of tea and leave so I love Sensasia Spa (they have the best ginger tea), but if you’re going for the facilities and Arabian touch, Talise Spa at Jumeirah Zabeel Saray – hands down.
NM: Best view of the city?
TS: Burj Khalifa’s at the top (tallest building in the world – surreal view)
NM: Best place for people watching?
TS: DIFC – Dubai International Financial Centre – Dubai’s Wall Street. Think handsome men in suits and chic women.
NM: What’s a must-purchase when visiting the souks?
TS: Gold… obviously 🙂
NM: Favorite hotel?
TS: If you’re going for something more Arabian, Royal Mirage. If you are looking for something minimal and high-tech, I would suggest Armani Hotel. If you want to stay at an artsy boutique hotel in Old Dubai, I would suggest XVA hotel.
NM: Go-to place for evening drinks?
TS: When the weather is perfect, opt for a rooftop bar – 40Kong or Iris. If it’s too humid, GQ Bar (delicious drinks and great sushi). If you want more of a night out, head to District (they also play the best Rnb music.)
NM: Best dinner experience?
TS: Zuma (Dubai’s Zuma is better than London – sorry, London) – always a great night, whatever day of the week it is!
NM: Don’t leave Dubai without…
TS: Doing the typical desert-trip experience. Whether it’s your first time or your tenth, you’ll have an amazing time.
