NM Insider Stephanie Steinman’s Los Angeles
February 28, 2014
When she’s not jetsetting around the globe in search of the coolest hotels, restaurants and boutiques, freelance travel journalist Stephanie Steinman can be found enjoying the comforts of home in her native Los Angeles. From the palm trees and sunshine to the great outdoors, Steinman feels LA has it all. Here are her ten favorite places in Los Angeles.
This is, without a doubt, my favorite place in LA! I love everything about it – the pink and green color scheme, the palm trees, the restaurants… it’s the happiest place on earth. The Polo Lounge is the perfect spot to meet friends and the Fountain Room (which locals refer to as The Counter) is great for brunch. I always order pancakes, regardless of the time of day. The hotel is the perfect place to check in and enjoy a weekend “staycation.” “Hold all my calls, I’ll be at the pool!”
2. Franklin Canyon in Beverly Hills
Hiking in California sunshine is one of the greatest things about living in LA. The weather is almost always sunny, so the opportunities to get outside are endless. There are dozens of different trails and paths to take, and when I’m done I always feel so grateful and lucky to live in a fantastic city. Plus, I spend a lot of time in my car, so it’s nice to take advantage of the great outdoors.
3. Tower Bar
The Tower Bar at the iconic Sunset Tower Hotel offers up a great combination of chic Angelenos and A-list celebrities. I love having dinner here or meeting friends for drinks. The wood-paneled room is dark and cozy with a lot of private alcoves — perfect for intimate conversations or a secret rendezvous. They even let you create your own sundae for dessert, and that’s truly my idea of heaven!
4. Sugar Fish
LA is a city obsessed with its sushi. There are so many great places, but if you’re looking for real sushi, without all the fancy fuss, then Sugar Fish is a must. With a few locations scattered around the city, it’s always crowded and delicious. They also have darling little to-go boxes, for those hectic days when you need to eat your sushi on the run.
5. Soho House
Located on the top 2 floors of an inconspicuous Los Angeles office building, this members-only club is always a good idea. Dining in the rooftop garden, with stunning views of Los Angeles is a wonderful way to spend a night with friends! There is also a plush and comfy screening room (complete with candy and cocktails) and I love catching the latest films here. If you’re lucky enough to score an invite, go!
This is the ultimate California burger experience. The menu is simple (burger, fries, Coke, shakes) but the combination of how you can order is endless. In the middle of the day, or late at night, it’s my favorite cheap thrill!
7. Olive & June
This adorable shop is new to Beverly Hills but it has quickly upped the ante on your typical mani/pedi. Sweet and charming, they stock every shade of well-known brand nail polish you can imagine. Your ten fingers and ten toes will thank you.
8. La Scala
Having lunch at La Scala is practically a requirement of living in Beverly Hills. Their famous chopped salad is a out of this world (you will literally crave it!), and on a beautiful LA afternoon it seems like everyone in town is here, lunching and schmoozing with their friends.
9. La Prairie Spa at The Beverly Hills Hotel
This is my favorite place to get pampered. Intimate and quiet it’s a great spot to relax and recharge. Plus, they use all of the best La Prairie signature products, which is yet another reason why it’s on the top of my list.
I am a huge ice cream addict, and Sprinkles always hits the spot. Their famous Cap’n Crunch ice cream makes me swoon! In a cup, a cone or pressed between 2 cookies (hello, ice cream sandwich!), Sprinkles is a staple for me all year long. There is a reason the line is always out the door!
