Trending this Spring: The Hi-Def Lip
February 20, 2017
From glitter-coated lips at DKNY and Fendi to pops of pink at Cushnie et Ochs, the spring runways made it clear: More is more. Layered colors and textures are coming together to create multidimensional looks like we’ve never seen before. Among our favorites: a highly pigmented, velvety pout from Marc Jacobs Beauty and the ombré lip, which no one does like Dior. (Read on for our how-to.)
“There’s innovation everywhere you turn,” says Beauty VP Kelly St. John, “especially in the world of lip color.”
New this season: nonsticky glosses, mattes that feel like satin, and high-tech hybrid formulas. Givenchy’s limited-edition black-and-red lipstick reacts to the pH balance of your lips, creating a made-to-measure red—and Dior’s exfoliating sugar scrub has our beauty team #obsessed.
“Use it just like a balm and let the sugar granules dissolve into your lips to smooth, moisturize, and plump,” says St. John. “There’s nothing else like it on the market.”
Formulas weren’t the only improvements. Tom Ford’s dual-ended lip contour is as clever as can be. And lilah b., a California brand known for minimalist compacts and clean ingredients, joins the NM roster online and at our new Fort Worth store.
“Each season when the buyers and I head to market, we anticipate newness,” says St. John. “So, despite high expectations, we were blown away by all of the developments.”

Thuy Pham, International Makeup Artist for Dior, breaks it down
1. Prep Your Pout
“A smooth surface is a must. Exfoliate first with Dior’s new exfoliating sugar scrub.”
2. Build a Base
“Apply the darker of two colors along the lip line and blend inward.”
3. Highlight with a Pop
“Apply the lighter shade to the center of the top and bottom lips.”
