Every year the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival gets bigger. Not only has the number of attendees increased, this is the second year Coachella has sold out two separate weekends. The three-day festival has also expanded to include diverse fashion, food and art scenes – it’s a not-to-be missed cultural event. Weekend 1 kicked-off Friday at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, California.
Apart from the famous festival, the place “to be seen” is nearby Palm Springs – home to pristine pools, glamorous hotels and Mid-Century Modern architectural gems. Harper’s Bazaar got the party started on Friday at a poolside fete at the Parker Palm Springs, once owned by Merv Griffin. DJ Mia Moretti and singer Katy Perry were a few of the fashionable guests who gathered around the Gene Autry Pool to enjoy refreshing Grapefruit Fizzes and upbeat tunes.
Later that evening at the Empire Polo Field, a who’s-who list of international musicians took the stage. There was an overall excitement in the VIP area Friday evening as Ellie Goulding began belting Lights just as the sun set behind the iconic Coachella ferris wheel. Designer Alexander Wang was spotted sipping fresh coconut juice while waiting in line with models Jacquelyn Jablonski and Hanne Gaby for organic flatbread. The night continued with strong performances by Chromeo, Martin Garrix and Girl Talk.
Saturday was made for pool parties. Lacoste hosted their annual desert live pool party at a private estate while Opening Ceremony celebrated at The Saguaro Hotel pool. Crop-tops, cut-off denim shorts, round sunglasses, fringe backpacks and bohemian felt hats were the statement pieces to sport. Model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was spotted dancing to Kid Cudi while wearing a pale pink monochromatic ensemble – denim shorts and a tank top – along with round tortoise sunglasses and Laurence Dacade summer boots. Singer Pharrell Williams, sporting another one of his famous statement hats, captivated the evening’s music scene with a laundry list of surprise guests – Gwen Stefani, Snoop Dogg, Nelly, Busta Rhymes and P. Diddy.
The next morning designer Cynthia Vincent hosted an intimate brunch at a private residence in the Racquet Club Estates neighborhood of Palm Springs. The Mid-Century Modern home with a pristine pool and Bloody Mary bar was the perfect place to relax and prepare for another night of great music.
Later that evening DJ Calvin Harris dominated the music scene captivating one of the largest crowds of the weekend, according to Billboard. Apart from the music, Coachella fans are very much engaged by the art. This year’s hits included a moving art piece, a towering astronaut with a live-motion screen for a face called “Escape Velocity,” and an interactive snail with his own Twitter feed. Weekend 2 attendees have a lot to look forward to!
