10 Minutes With: Monique Lhuillier
June 9, 2016
Known for her incredible attention to detail, Monique Lhuillier has infused glamour into her ready-to-wear collections for over a decade. Her Fall 2016 collection introduces us to structured pieces, while still maintaining her noteworthy level of elegance and embellishment. We sat down with the designer to learn about her inspiration for fall pieces, her creative process, and how the brand has evolved over time.
Neiman Marcus: Where did you draw inspiration for your Fall 2016 collection?
Monique Lhuillier: My Fall 2016 collection is an artistic expression of a woman who is eccentric as well as elaborate, and it takes cues from style icon Talitha Getty. The collection incorporates textures and a rich color palette of cherry, teal blue, rose pink, and basil, contrasted by caramel and dark amber tones. Metallic hues are featured throughout and can be seen on our tailored separates, including pencil skirts and cropped pants. Dresses in the ready-to-wear collection beautifully blend dark colors with lacquer floral embellishment and are made with fabrics such as guipure lace—making them elegant and luxurious, yet comfortable.
NM: You’ve said that “more is more” this season. Is there such a thing as too much?
ML: It’s all about balance. For example, adding floral details and intricate embroidery to simple silhouettes, or creating an architectural look with bold colors and clean lines. I think women want to be more playful with fashion and feel more individualistic when putting looks together.
NM: Take us through your creative process. What’s your jumping-off point when you begin a collection?
ML: Art, travel, and architecture are a huge part of my life and everything I design. The creative process begins when something visually inspires me. Every season I push myself to evolve the collection.
NM: How do you define femininity when it comes to your runway designs?
ML: I want my woman to feel beautiful and glamorous, yet comfortable, when she is wearing a piece from my collection. Femininity comes from the delicate and luxurious fabrics I use, and my silhouettes are cut to flatter a woman’s body. I always make sure my pieces allow a woman to embrace her femininity.
NM: Wedding season is right around the corner. What does that mean for you? What are you looking forward to?
ML: I love to be able to take part in such a special occasion and to see how brides style my designs to reflect their personalities. It’s so rewarding to hear from women on how special they feel in my creations.
NM: How has couture made its way into bridal fashion over the years?
ML: Brides are willing to take more risks on their wedding day—whether it’s wearing color or a great lace jumpsuit. I feel that brides today want to infuse their personality into their wedding look, and designers are finding more ways to allow them to do that.
NM: Your ready-to-wear collection at New York Fashion Week was all about the details. What can we look forward to in future collections?
ML: You can expect to see more interesting collections with new and innovative fabrics. I am continuously evolving my collection by adding in more separates and daywear to accommodate our very busy customer. We are celebrating our 20-year anniversary, therefore I have spent a lot of time revisiting my archives and pulling inspiration from them.
NM: How has being based in L.A. influenced you as a designer?
ML: I love the California light and lifestyle. I love to spend time outdoors, especially with my family. We have wonderful restaurants, great communities, a thriving art scene, and plenty of creativity all around.
