Conversation with: Aerin Lauder

Aerin Lauder is a woman we look to for direction on easy elegance and a beautiful work-life balance, so we were thrilled to learn of her new book, Beauty at Home. We sat down with the author to learn more about what inspires her.
How does your grandmother’s legacy inspire you?
My grandmother really was a true pioneer and an incredibly savvy businesswoman. She taught us the importance of quality, attention to detail, and above all, the value of customer relationships. The women in my family have this inherent desire to make everything around them beautiful. We believe that beauty stems from confidence and confidence stems from beauty. That belief has very much translated into the Aerin brand DNA. I love being surrounded by women who inspire and challenge me to be better at what I do.
What was your inspiration for your new book?
I wanted to tell a story about beauty, home, family and my heritage. Since I am a visual person, I wanted to do it through pictures and beautiful moments. I dedicated this book to my parents and sister who have encouraged me to be who I am today.
What does “living beautifully” mean to you?
Aerin is based on the premise that living beautifully should be effortless. We develop curated collections in beauty, fashion and home that can stand alone or be combined in a way that feels very cohesive because we develop cross-category product that can work together.
We love the artful packaging of your beauty line. Tell us about that.
I spent several years working on my first collection and was extremely hands-on in the design process – down to every last detail of the packaging. The packaging reflects the beautiful scent of each product. The first time I saw the finished product on the counter was an extremely rewarding experience.
How is fragrance a part of daily life for you?
Fragrance is a big part of daily life for me. I find fragrance very uplifting and inspiring. I wear fragrance every day (usually a Rose scent), and I also love scenting my home, as well, with Aerin Home Fragrances.
What is your approach to beauty? Does it change from day to day? Is it different at night?
I keep my beauty simple with key essentials – bronzer, brown eyeliner, mascara and lip gloss. Bronzer is my secret product for looking pulled together without minimal effort. For lips, I like a subtle hint of color and texture. I use a rose lipstick like the Aerin Rose Balm Lipstick. A beautiful, clean, effortless look can be created with only a few products, whether it’s for day or night.
What is your most cherished memory?
The launch of the Aerin brand is one of my proudest moments. I spent several years working on my first collection and was extremely hands-on in the design process – down to every last detail of the packaging. The first time I saw the finished product on the counter was an extremely rewarding experience.
You describe blue and white as part of your “decorating DNA.” Tell us why you love it.
I grew up sleeping in a blue and white bedroom, so those colors are a part of my decorating DNA, and I use the combination often. The Aerin wavy ikat pattern was inspired by the blue and white Pierre Frey fabric and wallcovering that my grandmother Estée Lauder picked for a bedroom in her country home, which I now own.
How do you personalize your decor?
The easiest way to personalize decor is to include family pictures and special moments in frames. Collecting items that are meaningful to you is also a great way to add a personal touch. I have been collecting shells for many years and am always looking for new ones throughout my travels.
What is the one message or theme that is intertwined throughout all your categories?
I love the outdoors and often find inspiration there for a collection, whether it’s home, fashion accessories or beauty. All eight of the Aerin fragrances are based on floral notes. Lilac Path, for example, came to me as I walked by a lilac bush that my grandmother planted at our home on Long Island.
