10 Minutes with: John Varvatos Prior to his Spring 2016 Show at NYFWM

On July 16, designer John Varvatos will present his spring 2016 runway collection, taking the prestigious closing spot of the inaugural New York Fashion Week: Men’s. He’ll also take over the @NeimanMarcus and @NMmanstore Instagram handles for the day, sharing exclusive backstage content leading up to the show. He paused from show prep to answer a few questions.

NM: How do you feel about returning to New York after 8 years showing in Milan?

JV: In March, we opened a store in my hometown of Detroit and we received such an overwhelmingly positive response that it made me want to bring the fashion show back to New York. I am very excited about coming home to help launch the first ever NYC menswear week!

NM: Even though your roots are in Detroit, you also have deep ties to New York City. Your store is on the site of the seminal punk club CBGB. Can you share with us what New York means to you?

JV: New York is my home. The people, the energy. You just can’t beat it. There’s no other place in the world like it.

NM: You wrote a great book on the symbiotic relationship between rock and fashion. Now you’ll have a rock photographer shooting backstage. Tell us more.

JV: I wouldn’t be where I am today if not for the music I discovered growing up in Detroit in the late 1960s and 1970s. There are traces of it in the way I dress and the look of my menswear collections over the past dozen years. Jessica Lehrman will provide a unique point of view of the show backstage experience, one through a “live concert” lens versus a fashion lens.

NM: Stripes are major theme for your upcoming collection. You are even promoting a #seeingstripes campaign on Instagram leading up to the show. Why stripes? And why Instagram?

JV: The stripes in the SS16 collection are bold. The message I want the collection to convey is “be adventurous”. Instagram allows the consumer to experience our imagery in a unique and compelling way so when they see the new collection they have a better sense of our inspiration and direction.

NM: You are the first menswear designer, and only the third person to take over the Neiman Marcus Instagram handles. What does this opportunity mean to you and how you view social media as it relates to your brand?

JV: It is an honor to be able to work with such a prestigious retailer whom we’ve been partners with for years that understands a brand’s perspective. Social media has allowed me to make a connection with our fans and bring them into the JV world. I hope to share that connection with the NM audience.
