NYFW – Final day!
September 13, 2013
Reporting daily from New York Fashion Week.
3:00pm – Elizabeth and James, Spring 2014 presentation
Versatile, slouchy and light. This collection simply offers the building blocks of a cool city girl’s wardrobe next Spring. And the Olsen’s brand is very serious about accessories now. A chunky chain necklace and a sling bag (a sort of simplified backpack) are the perfect accessories to these easy silhouettes.
8:00pm – Marc Jacobs, Spring 2014 show
Most runway shows start at least 30 minutes late, but Marc starts on the dot. So if you were stuck in traffic due to the torrential downpour, as many of the guests apparently were, that’s just too bad. (Although not bad for me, because I got promoted to the front row.) The Stefan Beckman-designed set was a trash-strewn, black sand beach with some of the detritus blown up to massive proportions. Dramatic organ music brought everyone to attention, snapping us out of our drenched, steamy daze. Models marched down a weathered wooden plank, all of them wearing sawed-off blonde wigs. Of course the collection was completely unexpected. Dark Victorian gowns and officer jackets, in drapery fabrics ornately decorated with tassels and ribbons, were made current by Bermuda shorts, skater-style sneakers and river sandals. It was so dark and cerebral for a Spring collection, and made me think more critically about everything I’d seen all week, then ponder what’s ahead in Europe.
