It’s hard not to fall in love with Carven. If you’re already a fan – and cannot wait for the beautiful and witty fall skirts, tops and dresses to arrive at NM – you’re going to love it even more. If you’re new to the label, here’s a treat for you. Since Guillaume Henry joined Carven in 2009 as creative director, he has injected the brand with art, humor, femininity and unexpected elements – the prints recall surrealist collages, illustrations and landscapes, while the silhouettes and proportions are always feminine with a very French, sophisticated twist. We were ecstatic to hear about the Carven girl and what the brand is all about from Henry himself. Just the thought of any Carven collection in CUSP makes us swoon with excitement, and we know we are not alone.

NM: How would you describe Carven to American customers at Neiman Marcus?
GH: Carven is a sophisticated and affordable brand. It is an inspired brand, easy to embody. Clothing with a twist of soul, neither ordinary nor conceptual.

NM: Who’s the Carven girl, and how has she evolved throughout the years?
GH: She is a spontaneous and charming girl who is like the brand, very approachable. The Carven girl does not put distance with others, but with years passing by she gets her own vocabulary.


NM: What’s your take on recreating elements that define Carven? Do you constantly look back into the archives?
GH: Carven is above all a state of mind. When working on a collection or a piece of clothing, we always make sure that it responds to the philosophy of the brand – a mix between couture and sport, sophistication and daily use, rich and poor. And for this no need to look back in the archives but to focus on what the brand is since its very beginning.

NM: Do you have any muses who represent the spirit of the brand?
GH: I do not have muses, but there are real or fictional people who can be a real source of inspiration. Individuals who share with Carven the same taste in fashion. I am thinking of Alexa Chung, for example.


NM: Describe your latest collection in three words
GH: Fresh, naive and ‘90s souvenirs

NM: Your go-to spot in Paris for inspiration…
GH: Anywhere! Watching people from a terrasse is always a great inspiration.

NM: On a Saturday afternoon, where could we find you?
GH: Probably with some friends at the Palais Royal in the first arrondissement.

NM: Name a Carven essential.
GH: A shirtdress.

NM: Are you planning on coming to the U.S. anytime soon?
GH: I would love to come to New York to see the latest exhibition at the Met.
