Honoring Monique Lhuillier
December 1, 2016
Twenty years ago, Monique Lhuillier launched her eponymous, L.A.-based line with bridal couture, expanding into ready-to-wear six years later. Now, her ethereal eveningwear is a red-carpet standard. In honor of the designer’s many achievements and the 20th anniversary of her label, NM Fashion Director Ken Downing presented Lhuillier with the Career Achievement in Fashion award at Fashion Group International of Dallas’ annual Night of Stars Gala earlier this month.
The designer started her day by stopping by NM Downtown to celebrate at an intimate luncheon and trunk show with some of her best Dallas clients. We sat down with Lhuillier to reflect on the milestone year.
How are you feeling about receiving the Career Achievement in Fashion award tonight?
When I heard that I was getting the award I was overjoyed. It’s an honor, and the timing couldn’t be more perfect. It makes you stop and think about the journey. I feel a profound sense of accomplishment and am beyond grateful.
What advice would you give yourself if you could go back in time 20 years?
Design is only good if somebody can actually wear it and feel good in it. Sometimes, designs are so avant-garde they don’t flatter anyone. Clothes have to serve a purpose. Also, always be true to your vision and aesthetic.
Which designers who came before you do you most admire?
I always loved the European greats: Hubert de Givenchy, Valentino Garavani, Christian Dior. When women wore their clothes, they felt so transformed and special. That’s what I’ve always wanted to capture for my customer, but in a modern way.
How did you choose what to wear tonight?
I’m wearing a gown from my Resort 2017 Collection. I happen to love red. It makes me feel confident, glamorous, and celebratory.
Tell us about your history with Neiman Marcus.
When I launched my eveningwear collection, Neiman Marcus was one of the early supporters. We’ve been partners through it all. It’s amazing to have such a strong bond.
And you’re friends with NM Fashion Director Ken Downing…
I’m great friends with Ken Downing, and I’m so honored that he’s giving me the award tonight. We have such a wonderful relationship.
What inspired the Spring 2017 Collection?
Spring has a lot of nostalgic elements. I was reflecting on my 20th anniversary and decided to journey through my archives. It’s a timeless collection, a retrospective of what I’ve done.
