#NMweddings: A Truly Gorski Evening with Lauren Gorski
December 21, 2016
Created in 1984, Gorski has been a longtime leader in the fur industry. The Montreal-based fashion house is family owned, presenting luxury furs, fur accessories, and fur-trimmed outerwear.
We recently had the pleasure of sitting down with Lauren Gorski, the daughter of founders Leonard and Karin Gorski, to discuss her enchantingly lavish wedding. The bride filled us in on every detail, from how she met the love of her life to the elegant furs the bridal party wore—and all the planning that took place in between.
Neiman Marcus: Tell us about your engagement. How did you meet your husband? When did you know he was the one?
Lauren Gorski: Matthew and I met through mutual friends in Montreal, our fabulous hometown. We hit it off right away. We share the same interests, love our respective careers, and value our close-knit families and friends.
After graduating from University of Ottawa, we moved back to Montreal to pursue our careers. We make it a tradition to visit Ottawa for the world-renowned Tulip Festival each spring. In 2013, we went on our annual trip, and Matthew surprised me outside the University where it all began—in front of a beautiful field of colorful tulips. This tall handsome guy got down on one knee in front of hundreds of passersby and popped the question!
Matthew arranged for our parents to be there and surprise me as well. They were watching from a distance and ran over—champagne in hand, ready to celebrate!
NM: Many brides dream of their wedding day for their entire lives. Can you describe your vision for your big day?
LG: My vision was to find a loving partner, celebrate in an intimate setting, and ultimately hold a special occasion with close family and friends.
The charming Ritz-Carlton Montreal, with its legendary oval ballroom and grand crystal chandelier, provided an elegant setting. Our stunning plush white floral arrangements, floating candles, crystal settings, and elevated design elements of the reception were like a fairytale.
We wanted an unforgettable party filled with music, Champagne, gowns, jewels, and of course, luxurious furs!
NM: Were you surprised by any part of the planning process?
LG: I have planned so many events over the years! I started planning parties at quite a young age for my siblings and then events for Gorski—trunk shows, fashion shows, personal appearances, and corporate gatherings. However, I must say planning your own wedding is so exciting. I had an amazing event planning team and supply partners who were key in making the planning process and wedding weekend execution stress-free and seamless.
It also made it easier that my husband and I had a clear vision of what we wanted, and our families were very supportive. My biggest surprise was how quickly it all happens. So, tip for future brides: Enjoy every moment—from engagement, to planning, the big day, and beyond.
NM: Tell us about the fur shawls the bridesmaids wore. They were gorgeous!
LG: This was so fun! My color scheme was black and white. All my bridesmaids wore black gowns, and I arranged to have each styled with a different Gorksi chinchilla shawl. They loved it and were so excited to wear the luxe fur. Aren’t they stunning?
NM: We love how you incorporated your namesake fur pieces into your wedding. How can brides elevate the level of luxury with such exquisite accessories?
LG: Fur fashion reflects ultimate timeless luxury—it’s soft, natural, and so beautiful. I really wanted to incorporate jewels and modern furs as a symbol of lasting beauty. I love that fur can be worn for lavish occasions and casual events alike—dress it up or down, fur is my go-to! It makes you feel so fabulous.
NM: You were a radiant bride! Tell us about getting ready the day of. Any tips to stay calm?
LG: You’re so sweet! The night before our wedding, I slept at my parent’s house. My parents and siblings were home with me in anticipation of the big day! I remember waking up with the biggest smile on my face ready for a memorable day to come.
My mother, sister, and I were greeted at The Ritz by our glam team. My father and brother were hanging out to make sure everything was in place and ensure we had all we needed.
Tips for brides-to-be: Your wedding is a day to celebrate and enjoy an important milestone—don’t sweat the small stuff. Agree on a path before you start planning, get an organized wedding planning assistant, establish a timeline, and most importantly, have fun.
NM: We’re sure the Champagne was flowing! What was on the menu?
LG: Indeed it was! Montreal is known for great cuisine with celebrity chefs and amazing restaurants. We had a nouvelle cuisine French menu, beautifully presented, white-glove elevated attentive tableside service, and a marvelous dessert presentation that filled the entire foyer. Our midnight spread was great and kept our guests celebrating with us through the night!
NM: Where did you go for the honeymoon? How did you and your husband decide with almost endless locations to choose from?
LG: We finally decided on Southern California and Hawaii. We stayed at The Ritz-Carlton in both Laguna Niguel and Kapalua, Maui, and we had an amazing time.
NM: We know it’s hard to narrow down, but looking back on your special day, what are your favorite moments?
LG: The whole weekend was perfect. I want to do it all over again—the breathtaking flowers that enchanted the room, the modern elegance of The Ritz-Carlton venue, the energetic music by an 11-member band, and the loving people who surrounded us completed the evening. The whole day was nothing short of magical.
If I had to pick one moment, I would say walking into the reception and being introduced as Mr. and Mrs. for the first time—holding my husband’s hand and looking around the room at all our loved ones. It was the beginning of a new chapter—my dream as a bubbly, energetic, optimistic, and happy girl came true. I married my best friend and the love of my life.
Congratulations Lauren and Matthew on a truly remarkable evening and marriage!
